A very rarely seen bird in Orange County, Northern Saw-whet owls are small in size, very camouflaged, nocturnal, and prefer altitudes above 1,000 ft. where the conifer trees are which means you will only find them up in the Santa Ana Mountains. They have a very distinct call which sounds like a bunch of high pitched "toots." The way birders identify them is mainly with sound, not sight because they are very difficult to find. Their diet consists mainly of small rodents.
