Striped Skunk
One of two types of skunks found in Orange County, striped skunks can be found throughout the county, the other being the spotted skunk which is much less common. Skunks are known for their spray which is why most people do not want to encounter one or get close but they don't just go around spraying people, they will only spray humans if they feel threatened. Their spray comes from two scent glands next to their anus and can spray up to 10 feet. Skunks have poor vision and rely heavily on smell and hearing. They typically will come out from their dens after sunset to forage. During spring and summer, you might find a mother with her kits. Their diet consists of bugs, nuts, berries, and occasionally small rodents. You will likely find them in any wilderness areas or in many park within urban cities.
