Western gray squirrels are 1 of the 2 native squirrel species in Orange County and can be found foraging for nuts, berries, insects, and seeds on the ground and in trees in the foothills or mountain areas of Orange County. They are not as common due to habitat loss as well as competition from introduced species such as the eastern fox squirrel. You might find them in trees or on the ground in parks throughout neighborhoods or in the wilderness.
